Historical Inflation

Prices rise over time, so a dollar buys less than it used to. Pick an amount and two years to see how much money it would take in one year to match what that amount bought in the other, based on the government’s Consumer Price Index.

About these numbers

Uses the annual average Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), U.S. city average, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1913 through 2025. The adjusted amount is the starting amount times the ratio of the two years’ index levels. The CPI tracks a broad basket of goods and services, so your own costs may have risen faster or slower.
