Pay Down Debt or Invest?

When you have extra money each month, it can go toward a debt or into investments. This tool follows both paths with the same monthly budget and compares where each could leave you: what you own minus what you owe.

About these numbers

Both paths use the same monthly budget. Debt interest is charged monthly at the APR divided by 12; investments grow at a steady monthly rate from the assumed annual return, with no taxes, fees, or market swings. Real returns vary and can be negative, and the debt rate is assumed never to change. The investment return is hypothetical and does not represent any specific investment.

This calculator is a hypothetical illustration for educational purposes only. Results are based on the assumptions you enter and the method described above, may vary with each use and over time, do not reflect any specific investment or the deduction of fees or taxes unless stated, and are not a guarantee of future results. The tool does not consider every investment, account type, or strategy that may be available to you. It is not investment, tax, or legal advice. Investing involves risk, including possible loss of principal. 4:8 Financial does not provide tax or legal advice; please consult your CPA or attorney regarding your specific situation.
