Federal Capital Gains Tax Estimator

When you sell an investment for more than you paid, the profit is a capital gain. How it is taxed depends mostly on how long you owned it and on your income. Enter the details to estimate what you might owe in federal tax. State tax may apply too.

About these numbers

Uses 2026 federal brackets. With “I’ll pick my rate,” the whole gain is taxed at the rate you choose. With “Estimate from my income,” the gain is added on top of the other taxable income you enter and taxed bracket by bracket. The net investment income tax is based on modified adjusted gross income, which is usually higher than taxable income, so this estimate uses taxable income as a rough stand-in and may understate it. State taxes, the alternative minimum tax, and other gains and losses during the year are not included.
